Behind the humor and memorable lines of A League of Their Own lies the inspiring true story of the women who helped change baseball history.

The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) was the first professional women's baseball league in the United States. During World War II, many Major League Baseball players were serving in the military, raising concerns that professional baseball could lose its audience. To help keep the sport alive, Philip K. Wrigley, owner of the Chicago Cubs, created the league in 1943 as an initially temporary initiative.

However, as attendance grew and public interest increased, the league remained active until 1954.

The women who joined the league were true pioneers. Beyond demonstrating exceptional athletic ability, they also had to meet standards that had little to do with baseball. They wore skirts instead of practical uniforms—often resulting in painful injuries while sliding into bases—and were required to attend charm school, wear makeup, and maintain a "ladylike" appearance.

Players also followed a strict code of conduct and were accompanied by official chaperones during their travels. These women supervised the athletes, enforced behavioral standards, and helped preserve the public image the league wanted to project.

While many characters and events portrayed in the film are fictional, they reflect challenges that countless women experienced throughout that era—and, in some cases, still face today. The story highlights the pressure to become exemplary wives and mothers, the expectation to meet traditional standards of beauty, doubts about women's professional competence, and different forms of gender-based discrimination and harassment.

In 1988, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was honored with a permanent exhibit at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, recognizing its lasting contribution to this sport and to women's history.
